Are all the state-of-the-art, high-tech gadgets and databases featured in shows like CSI Miami, for real?

Do facilities for forensic investigation like the ones in the show, really exist, or is it just show business? Some Mexican friends would really like to know, and I don´t wish to hurt their feelings, especially when compared to the very limited resources and investigation methods available in their country.
